Decades of sustainable power innovation
Komatsu’s work in sustainable power spans decades. Electric drive systems in mining equipment date back more than 60 years. Komatsu electric rope shovels for mining have been in use since the 1990s. For the construction industry, Komatsu introduced the world’s first hybrid hydraulic excavator, followed by expanded hybrid models in 2016. In 2020, battery-powered mini excavators were introduced, delivering zero-emission operation in urban environments.
More recently, Komatsu has expanded electrification across its portfolio, including battery-electric excavators, electric-drive mining trucks, electrically powered mining excavators, and battery-powered underground mining equipment, such as lithium-ion battery haulers. This progression reflects a consistent strategy: Evolve power systems while maintaining productivity, durability and efficiency. Formula 1[AR2.1] has followed a similar trajectory, introducing hybrid powertrains in 2014. In both industries, innovation builds over time, each step improving efficiency without sacrificing performance.
