Engineering knowledge exchange: Komatsu team members sit down with elite motorsport technical mind

In March 2026, our Shonan Plant in Japan welcomed two special guests from Atlassian Williams F1 Team: driver Carlos Sainz and Chief Technical Officer Pat Fry.While at the facility, Pat took the time to meet with two young Komatsu engineers and discuss a variety of topics relating to engineering, technical development and career progression.The forum highlighted the similarities between Williams and Komatsu, from a shared passion for innovation to the Kaizen approach to improvement.

 


The team members who were given this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity all work on Komatsu’s AHS (Autonomous Haulage System) project, which involves developing new systems that enable the unmanned operation of Komatsu’s ultra-class dump trucks at mine sites around the world. With this background experience, they were interested to hear Pat’s views on how technology has evolved during his career and where he feels it is heading in the future.

“Well, if you take aerodynamics as an example, 30 years ago we just used a wind tunnel to collect and analyse data,” explained Pat. “Then 20 years ago we brought in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Now in recent years we have utilised neural networks to interpret CFD cases, allowing us to quickly see how things change between multiple results. And then if we look forward to the next few years, we expect to be in a position where we can ask the system questions such as ‘I want to move these flow structures around to be able to gain an advantage’ and it will come back and tell you what shape the aerodynamic pieces need to be to increase that performance. Technology is always evolving, and both with us at Williams and you at Komatsu, you have to work hard to stay at the cutting edge.”

Having spent almost 40 years at the pinnacle of motorsport across various teams and roles, Pat has seen firsthand how important this commitment to development and innovation is to building success, whatever the industry. “The reason why I love Formula 1 is that you have to keep learning,” he said. “If we develop a car and it wins a world championship, we can’t just stop there, we have to keep moving forward to make sure other teams don’t move past us. And that goes for all technology. You’ve got to keep pushing the boundaries of innovation every single day.”

This mindset aligns closely to Komatsu’s Kaizen approach to business. The very heart of Kaizen is achieving success through frequent small improvements to processes, systems and routines. It’s making little changes, bit by bit, that become very big changes over time. For example, if an operation improves a tiny 1% each day, it will be 38 times better by the end of an entire year.

The other key differentiators behind Komatsu’s business stature and philosophy were at the heart of a question that Pat then posed to the team members. “As a young engineer, I’ve learned that Komatsu’s strengths are safety and reliability,” responded Kazuma Kodama (AHS Supervisory System Development Group, Field Automation Development Center, Development division). “We have the Komatsu Way philosophy, and if you follow that philosophy when you develop something, that becomes a difference compared to other companies. I think that’s the key point. The difference comes from the culture and the people. That culture helps create the advantage.”
Pat is one of the most experienced engineering minds in F1, having first joined the paddock in 1987.
The insightful conversation continued, with Pat and our engineers sharing knowledge around the key technologies that both Komatsu and Williams are developing. However, with up-and-coming engineers in the room, Pat was then asked what advice he would give to people who are just starting out in the industry:

“You have to do something you love. You spend so much of your life working that you have to find what excites you and that you enjoy doing every day. And you have to always be looking forward and be open to learning new things. Ultimately, knowledge is power, and the more you have, the more opportunities you will be able to take advantage of.”

Once the session had concluded and there had been time to reflect, it was clear that the experience with someone of Pat Fry’s knowledge and stature within motorsport had made a big impact on the young Komatsu engineers. “What left a strong impression on me was the comment that, although F1 engineers operate in a very demanding environment, they always enjoy what they do,” said Makoto Amemiya (AHS Supervisory System Development Group, Field Automation Development Center, Development division). “I now personally feel motivated to adopt a similar mindset and to always enjoy my work even in challenging situations.”

“I was amazed by the scale and sophistication of data utilization in F1,” commented Kazuma. “In F1, massive volumes of data are transmitted and analyzed. Based on these analyses, teams make real-time decisions on race strategy, vehicle setup changes, and even provide corner-by-corner instructions to the driver. I felt that if similar approaches could be incorporated into AHS, it could further enhance its value.”

While the worlds of elite motorsport and construction and mining seem incredibly different on the surface, the key approaches to innovation, development, culture and success are largely the same across both areas. Therefore, the forum with Pat Fry and some of Komatsu’s talented young engineers is a prime example of how Komatsu and Atlassian Williams F1 Team are using their partnership to share knowledge and create value together.
