Komatsu- Rio Tinto Scholarship for recovery assistance following the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami : Supported the future of studying for over 330 students of Tohoku University in 10 years

Mar. 12, 2021

Komatsu Ltd. (President and CEO: Hiroyuki Ogawa), jointly with Rio Tinto Japan Ltd., a leading mining company of mineral resource, has offered continuous assistance to students of Tohoku University who suffered financially from the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami under the Komatsu-Rio Tinto Scholarship established in 2011. On March 31, 2021, we will complete the designated term of 10 years. The Scholarship was created to support students for their studies when their lives were drastically affected by the unprecedented disaster. We are pleased to announce that the cumulative total of 333 students have used the Scholarship.

We have kept in touch with the recipient students, and received encouraging messages, such as “I am happy to secure sufficient time for studying without burning out on part-time jobs” and “I am relieved that I will be able to attend graduate school without financially burdening my parents”.

We feel proud to have been able to help students, to some extent, who will support the future of Japan’s manufacturing industries. At the same time, we also wish that other students and graduates, who also suffered from the disaster, will continue to do their best in their daily studies or work without worries by overcoming hardships.

We at Komatsu will continue to offer a variety of recovery assistance in the disaster-damaged areas.
